In the last few months, PDRN has become very popular, going from a niche ingredient to a must-try trend, popping up in almost every skincare product launch. The ingredient first appeared in K-beauty products, and it slowly made its way into occidental skincare industry. But what exactly is PDRN in skincare? Keep reading to find out.

Qué es el PDRN? What is PDRN?

El PDRN (polidesoxirribonucleótido) es un ingrediente reparador elaborado a partir de fragmentos de ADN purificado extraídos de peces, aunque actualmente también existen alternativas de origen vegetal. El PDRN tradicional se produce utilizando ADN extraído de las células reproductivas, generalmente de salmón y trucha. Actúa como ingrediente activo regenerador y ayuda a reparar las células de la piel, reducir la inflamación y favorecer la producción de colágeno. Inicialmente explorado en medicina para la cicatrización de heridas y la reparación de tejidos, el PDRN se incorporó a tratamientos estéticos profesionales en forma de inyecciones dérmicas y pronto se abrió camino en cosmética con PDRN tópico.

PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a repairing ingredient made from purified DNA fragments, most commonly extracted from certain fish, although plant-based alternatives are now also available. Traditional PDRN is produced using DNA extracted from the reproductive cells of usually salmon and trout.  It acts as a regenerative active ingredient and it helps repair skin cells, reduce inflammation and support collagen production. First explored in medicine for wound healing and tissue repair, PDRN moved into professional aesthetic treatments in the form of dermal injections and soon made its way into skincare with topical PDRN.

Mi experiencia usando cosméticos con PDRN My experience with PDRN skincare

En los últimos meses, he estado usando de manera continuada varios cosméticos con PDRN. Mi piel es muy seca y sensible, con signos de envejecimiento como pequeñas arrugas y pérdida de firmeza, así que siempre estoy dispuesta probar nuevos ingredientes para tratar mis problemas de la piel. Lo bueno del PDRN tópico es que se puede utilizar con otros ingredientes como el retinol, los péptidos, la niacinamida, el ácido hialurónico, la centella asiática, etc. Esto facilita la incorporación del PDRN a mi rutina de cuidado de la piel. No he experimentado ninguna reacción alérgica ni problemas de sensibilidad al usar PDRN tópico. Este ingrediente tiene propiedades calmantes y antiinflamatorias, por lo que generalmente es adecuado y seguro para pieles sensibles.

En cuanto a resultados, los cosméticos con PDRN me están funcionando principalmente en estos dos aspectos:

• Mi piel está más calmada y es menos reactiva. El PDRN ayuda a mantener la piel calmada y mi piel sensible lo está notando. Va a ser un ingrediente imprescindible en invierno, cuando mi piel tiende a ser bastante reactiva a las bajas temperaturas. En este aspecto, el PDRN es un ingrediente excelente para utilizar junto con retinoides y ácidos o como tratamiento posterior a la exfoliación para mantener mi piel calmada y protegida, además de minimizar reacciones cutáneas y enrojecimiento.
• Mi piel está más elástica. El uso continuado de cosméticos con PDRN ha resultado en una piel menos tirante, con un aspecto más relleno y jugoso. No es un cambio drástico, pero si noto que mi piel seca tiene mejor aspecto, está revitalizada y su textura es menos rugosa y esta más suave y tersa.

In the last few months, I’ve been consistently using several PDRN containing skincare products. My skin is very dry and sensitive with signs of aging such as small wrinkles and loss of firmness, so I’m always happy to try new skincare ingredients to help address my skin concerns. The good thing about topic PDRN is that it pairs well with other skincare ingredients such as retinol, peptides, niacinamide, hyaluronic, centella asiatica… This makes incorporating PDRN skincare an easy job. I haven’t experienced any allergic reaction or sensitive issues with the use of topic PDRN. The ingredient has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, so it is generally appropriate and safe for sensitive skin.

In terms of results, PDRN skincare is working for me mainly in these two fronts:

• My skin is calmer and less reactive. With its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, PDRN works to keep skin calm and I noticed my sensitive skin is loving it. I can see topic PDRN being an essential ingredient in winter when my skin tends to be more reactive due to extreme cold temperatures. I find topic PDRN a great ingredient to use together with retinoids and acids or as a post treatment after exfoliation to keep my skin soothed and protected as well as minimize reactions and redness.
• My skin feels more elastic and bouncier. Consistent use of PDRN skincare has resulted in skin that feels less tight, with a plumper, more supple appearance. It’s not a dramatic change, but I have noticed that my dry skin is in better condition, it looks more replenished and its texture feels smoother and supple.

That said, topical PDRN is a solid supporting ingredient that helps skin to stay calm, soft and hydrated plus it helps to improve the skin texture and visibly plump skin with continued use.
